Learning Objectives

The course aims to study and understand the evolution of political institutions between the national and international dimension in the contemporary age, with particular attention to the historical development of the multi-lateral government dimension. The course is ideally divided into two distinct but complementary parts: a first general part of methodological and historical-thematic framework on constitutionalism in Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and a second monographic part dedicated to the deepening of a specific aspect, namely the evolution international bodies active in the multilateral, especially after the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

Program

General Part:

- The specificity of the History of Political Institutions: main methodological questions

- The constitutional evolution in Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries.

- The main political institutions of the nation state between the 19th and 20th centuries

- The international dimension of the political institutions

- From Organizations to International Institutions: the evolution of the multilateral government

Monographic part:

- The collapse of the Berlin Wall and the evolution of the multilateral government

- National and international political institutions from the war in ex-Yugoslavia to the Covid-19 crisis

- The development of the common foreign and security policy of the European Union

- The Eurasian Union  

- The African Union

Bridging Courses

A basic knowledge of the main Contemprary History and International Relations developments of the XX century is recommended 

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: 

The student will have to show:

- basic theoretical and practical knowledge on some of the main issues and the most debated issues of relations between sovereign states in the 20th century;

- ability to correctly read and understand monographs of international relations in their basic meanings. These skills are acquired by actively participating in teaching activities (lessons, tutorials, seminars) and through individual study.

Teaching

Traditional classes will be integrated with conferences and thematic seminars on key topics of the course, inclusing some simulation sessions om Aid-Assistance project\programme design.  

Attendance

Students are invited to a minimum 70% class attendance.

Assessment

Oral exam. The assessment will also take into consideration the quality of eventual presentatinos\papers produced by the students throughout the course.

Attendance

Non attending students are invited to contact in due time the Profrssor in order to agree on a specific educational programme and to define the topic for a paper that is to be drafted by each student. 

Assessment

Oral exam on the course topics as well as on the paper prepared by the student.
