Learning Objectives

The first approach to the discipline must allow the understanding of the context in which you live, that is rather of the contemporaneity in which you are immersed both socially and technically, correlating this knowledge to the specific architectural and urban.

In particular, the course addresses the theme of architectural composition in the founding aspects of the method, spatial, distributive, functional and relational aspects, even through compositional models, bringing students closer to the complexity of the project in its relationship with the urban context.

The main objective of the teaching is to give both theoretical and practical principles to acquire and develop the sense and ability to measure the architectural space related to the reading of space and urban structure.

To this end the course chooses as teaching theme to develop a project with mixed functions of residences and services, with limited physical dimensions, contextualized in a stable and consolidated urban area.

The knowledge that the learner will have to assume will be related to the fundamentals of architectural composition, the selection and critical evaluation of models of living referred to modern and contemporary debate. Reading the constitutive elements of architectural and urban spaces. Basic references of morphological and spatial reading in the urban context. Critical analysis of typological and historical evolutionary characters of urban contexts.

Program

The course explores issues related to the relationship between the architectural project and the city.

1] Provides students with the basic notions for the knowledge of the meaning of architecture, the understanding of styles, what it is made of and the relationship between form and meanings. Together with the development phases of a project.

2] Provides knowledge of the definitions and method of approach of contemporary living as a place of single and family life, according to explanatory cases also as a broader settlement system.

3] Knowledge of the definitions and method of the concept of model, type, building typology, with respect to the place. In other words, the urban morphological fabrics that he composes, in order to recognize them in their dominant characteristics, between ancient and contemporary. Study of some particular cities, such as Bologna, Ferrara and European examples, such as Barcelona, Lisbon, etc. Also through the vision of relevant masters.

4] The knowledge of the city of Urbino as a case study, architectural typological settlement, and of the works that from the architectural to the urban scale were created by the architect. Giancarlo De Carlo.

5] It provides the knowledge to recognize the settlements in the different historical periods, fundamental to the reading of today's fabrics, as stratification processes. Relevant and significant case studies on an international scale. The founding principles of the new references of architectural and urban design in today's debate.

From an architectural composition point of view, the basic lines of the design method are addressed, supported by selected references on in-depth studies on historical references, the twentieth century and contemporary reality, including local ones, with related examples and case studies. In a complementary way, attention will be paid to the analysis of urban morphology and building types, with case studies in which the relationship between the urban structure and the shape and characteristics of the building systems is highlighted. In the seminar, the principles of composition of shapes and volumes, functional schemes and distributive characteristics of buildings will be developed. The principles of contemporary living will be addressed. Notions on living will be given with the support of the masters of modern architecture with examples that express its peculiar architectural characteristics. The concept of place, the relationship with memory and tradition. Morphological structure of the city with relevant examples. Building density and typology. The classroom activity will include the development of a small project starting from the design idea, identifying the defined relationships with the city and the environment. This is an intellectual and practical exercise that will involve the knowledge that will be gradually transferred and autonomously implemented. The project will be elaborated through drawings.
