Learning Objectives

 The aim of the course is to give the students the historical, cultural and critical instruments that are necessary to analyze the Italian Contemporary Culture. The relationships between literature, cinema and society will be put in evidence and discussed together with the students in order to provide them with a wider idea of what Italian culture is today.

Program

  • The Italian identity from the perspective of some well-known Twentieth Century intellectuals, with particular reference to Antonio Gramsci, Piero Gobetti and Giulio Bollati’s thoughts.
  • The Italian identity based on the ideas of modern authors such as Giacomo Leopardi, Carlo Levi, Carlo Emilio Gadda and Pier Paolo Pasolini. 
  • The development of the Italian identity from the Fascist period to the present, as depicted in Italian cinema.  
  • Viewing, analysis and comments on selected sequences from the following movies: Vincere by Marco Bellocchio; All’armi siam fascisti! by Lino Dal Fra, Cecilia Mangini and Lino Miccichè; Ladri di biciclette by Vittorio De Sica; Gomorra by Matteo Garrone; Un maledetto imbroglio by Pietro Germi; La ricotta by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Il divo by Paolo Sorrentino.
  • Bridging Courses

    It is preferable (but not mandatory) to have an understanding of the basic elements of the language / history / culture of Italy.

    Comprehension and knowledge

    By the end of the semester the students will be able to understand what are the elements that can be considered original to contemporary Italian culture and to identify their origin in relation to the socio-historical-economical evolution of the country during the period between the unification and nowadays.

    Applied knowledge

    By the end of this course students should be able to analyze different works of contemporary Italian cinema and literary texts from a literary, historical and sociological point of view.

    Critical thinking

    By the end of this course students should be able to gain a better understanding of properties shared by both art forms.

    Communication skills

    By the end of this course students should be able to discuss the idea of Italian national identity, providing insight into major cultural and socio-political issues of modern Italy.

    Learning skills

    By the end of this course students should be able to gain a better understanding of the style and of the cultural background of the writers studied in the course.
