Mandarin Chinese
This course is taught partially in Italian and partially in a foreign language. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language. |

Learning Objectives
Students will acquire a basic knowledge of Classical Chinese grammar and vocabulary and thus will be able to read and understand works written in Classical Chinese.
Program
History of the Chinese language:
- Historical, linguistic and geographical overview of Chinese and the other languages spoken in China today
- Periodization and development of the Han language, writing system, written and spoken language
- Linguistic typology of Mandarin Chinese and comparison with ancient Chinese
- Chinese characters and their principles of formation; strokes; radicals
Main features of Classical Chinese grammar, through the reading, analysis and translation of excerpts from original works:
- Nominal sentences
- Verbal sentences
- Nominalization of verbal sentences
- Sentence intonation
- Substitution
Bridging Courses
Having attended first-year Chinese language and culture exams is recommended.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding: students will acquire a good knowledge and understanding of the history and development of the Chinese language and of the main features of Classical Chinese grammar.
Applying knowledge and understanding: students will apply their knowledge and understanding offering solid arguments.
Making judgements: students will develop hypotheses and make autonomous judgments in order to discuss the development of the Chinese language and the meaning of the written production in Classical Chinese.
Communication skills: students will be able to communicate their knowledge and ideas using appropriate specialist language.
Learning skills: students will be able to read and understand works written in Classical Chinese and recognize its influence on Modern Chinese with a high degree of autonomy.

A basic knowledge of Modern Chinese is necessary. A basic knowledge of ancient Chinese culture is recommended.

- Assessment
Oral examination. Knowledge and understanding, ability to apply it, to make judgments and to to communicate the acquired knowledge through a specific language will be taken into account for the assessment.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
