Learning Objectives

The course aims  to orient the student in the panorama of the model of community psychiatric assistance that has developed, in Italy and in the world, after overcoming the model of psychiatric assistance founded exclusively on the great Psychiatric Hospitals. To achieve this goal, the course is divided into three parts: the first one dedicated to the knowledge of the history of psychiatric care; the second is dedicated to focusing on the structure of the current Mental Health Departments in which the clinical psychologist will work, as trainee or psychologist: the goal is to make the clinical psychologist aware of how a Department is articulated of Psychiatry and what is the relationship between the places of clinical intervention (SPDC, Center of Mental Health, Surgery, Intermediate Structures) and the clinical forms in which the mental disorder manifests itself; the third part is dedicated to the deepening of a clinical theme of particular relevance and commitment in the practice of the Service

Program

LESSONS 1-6: The first part of the program is dedicated to a brief historical introduction, focused on the transition from the asylum assistance model to the new territorial or community psychiatry of which the inspiring principles and organizational aspects will be outlined, with the aim of delineating the role of the clinical psychologist in the activities of mental health services (preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic-rehabilitative).

LESSONS 6-12: The second part of the program is aimed at illustrating the organizational and operational methods of modern Mental Health Services, based on the principles of community psychiatry. After some hints relating to psychiatric nosography (with reference to DSM-5) we will consider behaviors that can be inscribed in different psychopathological disorders, outlining the different characteristics at the level of subjective experience lived (for example self-injurious or suicidal behaviors). Or we will consider particularly serious clinical pictures with which the Services typically work: bipolar disorders, chronic schizophrenic disorders, severe personality disorders. On each occasion we will try to achieve an integration between different perspectives: epidemiological, medical-biological, clinical psychological and psychopathological in a phenomenological-dynamic sense.

LESSONS 12-18: In the third part of the course, space will be given to the illustration of the main classes of psychotropic drugs and the description of the clinical pictures will be integrated, whenever possible, by examples taken from the clinic, especially with clinical seminars to which they will be invited to participate as co-teachers who work in the Services and who can bring their direct work experience.

Making judgments: the ability to use knowledge and concepts to initiate clinical reasoning in reference to original material consisting of clinical case reports or clinical vignettes.
Communication skills: the specific language for the description of basic psychopathological and clinical phenomena.
Learning skills: Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired good autonomy in reading clinical material and in critical understanding of complex psychopathological phenomena that can occur in contemporary clinical situations.
