Learning Objectives

The course aims to enhance and deepen the theoretical and applied knowledge in the field of corporate communication acquired previously. Special attention will be paid to the stylistics of the language of official and business documents, as well as to the etiquette of oral and written speech.

Program

Functional stylistics (fundamental concepts)

Official style. General characteristics.

Substyles of official style: style of official documents (legislative acts, diplomatic documents) and style of ordinary formal communication (communication between state bodies, communication of private companies with the public administration, internal and external business communication)

Style of ordinary official communication.

(a) Written communication and its linguistic particularities:

- lexicon (standardized terms, proper nouns, clichés, deverbal nouns, performative verbs, compound words)

- morphology (participles, adjectives, declension of surnames)

- syntax (word order, coordination and juxtaposition, conjunctions и, ещё, кроме того, вдобавок, то есть, а именно, иначе говоря, вернее, точнее, также, а также; causal clause introduced by потому что, так как, поскольку, благодаря тому что, из-за того что, вследствие того что, в результате того что, ввиду того что, в силу того что, в связи с тем что, implicit subordinate clauses, passive voice, use of connectors and linking words.

- spelling (capitalization)

- punctuation (direct address, simple series, subordination)

(b) oral communication and its linguistic and extralinguistic particularities. Telephone conversation.  Commercial negotiation.

Language of advertising.

Language etiquette (formal and informal way of: introducing oneself and others, making and accepting invitation, asking a question, asking for permission, expressing thanks and gratitude, agreement, disagreement, doubt, one's point of view, congratulation, wishes, giving advice, making a proposal, a compliment, giving positive and negative evaluation, addressing people. Use of patronymic. Standardized expressions)

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding. Characteristics of official style. Capacity to distinguish official stile form other functional styles.

Applying knowledge and understanding. Use the acquired knowledge to understand, analyze, and contextualize the original texts normally used in the business environment.

Making judgements. Gather and interpret relevant data contained in written and oral messages using linguistic and extralinguistic elements.

Communication skills. Manage business communication in Russian observing formal and technical requirements.

Learning skills. Students should be able to orient themselves autonomously in the consultation of normative documents (GOST) establishing the requirements for official communication.
