Learning Objectives

The course aims to explore the themes and narrative forms revolving around the phenomenon of immigration in France through a sampling of texts that migrate from one medium to another.
 

Program

After outlining the most significant moments in the history of immigration in France and the politique de la ville to meet housing needs through the construction of the banlieues, the course will focus on the analysis of narrative and filmic texts in progrmma sewconbdo the following planning:

1) The history of immigration in France

2) La marche des beurs

3) the birth of the banlieues

4) The riots of 2005

5) The language of the banlieue

6) Mémoire d'immigrés: from the documentary to the text by Yamina Benguigui to the comic strip by Jérôme Ruillier

7) La haine by Mathieu Kassovitz and Viscéral by Rachid Djaïdani

8) Chroniques de l'asphalte by Samuel Benchetrit: from text to film 

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

-Knowledge and ability to understand: the student has a good knowledge of historical contexts and French cultural products through the use of advanced level texts, updated from a critical, historiographical and methodological point of view.
-Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student uses the tools and knows how to apply the methodologies learnt in the analysis of literary texts to the understanding of non-literary texts and documents.
-Autonomy of judgement: the student possesses linguistic, critical and interpretative skills useful in determining autonomous reflections and judgements on broadly cultural themes related to the linguistic and literary fields studied
-Communication skills: the student is able to communicate in French general information and knowledge specific to his/her field of study involving the use of even complex syntactic structures.
-Learning ability: the student has developed the necessary learning skills to be able to update and consolidate his/her knowledge.

Teaching

The course includes:

  • classroom lectures
  • group activities 
  • oral presentations
  • interactive lessons aimed at discussing the papers prepared by the students

The exposition of topics will be supported by the analysis of textual, iconographic and multimedia documents.
 

Innovative teaching methods

The course is entirely taught in French. In addition to classroom lectures, the course includes exercises and research on specific topics, both in groups and individually. Some issues are treated and explored through the “flipped lesson” modality.

    Assessment

    Oral examination in French. The candidate's mastery of knowledge, argumentation skills, exposition in French and capacity for analysis and criticism will be judged according to the following evaluation grid:

    The candidate

    -Answers the questions asked not entirely adequately and shows some deficiencies in content, textual analysis and exposition in the language: 18-21

    -Easily answers the questions posed but does not show particular ability to make the appropriate connections between phenomena, social probelamtics and texts. Exposition is not entirely satisfactory at: 22-24

    -Responseses comprehensively to questions but does not demonstrate sufficient command and maturity in making appropriate connections between authors and literary currents. Exposition is clear: 25-27

    -Responseses comprehensively to questions, demonstrates excellent command in making appropriate connections. Exposition is very clear and the discourse well structured: 28-30

    -Responses in depth to questions, shows excellent command and critical sense in making appropriate connections. Exposition demonstrates considerable ownership and fluency of language: 30 cum laude

    Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

    Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

    To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
