Learning Objectives

The course intends to offer a broad knowledge of mediation, from its theoretical assumptions within the paradigm of ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) and implications, focusing on the psychological and communication aspects. Particular attention will be paid to the conflict and its definition and management. The course will also deepen the family mediation, as a clinical intervention for the couple in separation, addressing the issues related to this phase of the life cycle.

Program

In particular, the course will focus on:

- Mediation within ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) procedures 2 hours

- The conflict: definitions 4 hours

- The different types of conflict mediation: social, scholastic, family, commercial and criminal 6 hours

- The legislation on mediation 4 hours

- The various forms of conflict mediation: transformative mediation and problem solving mediation 4 hours

- The phases and techniques of mediation 8 hours

- Family mediation 8 hours

- Clinical interventions on separation and divorce 4 hours

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

  • Knowledge and under standing. At the end of the course, students must be able to understand and explain the fundamental concepts of mediation (what it is about, how it works, what its theoretical assumptions are) and in particular what uses mediation can have.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course, students will have to demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge on mediation techniques, on the phases of mediation and on its applications.
  • Autonomy of judgment (making judgments). At the end of the course, students will have to demonstrate the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reason with autonomy of judgment according to the logic of the discipline.
  • Communication skills. At the end of the course, students must be able to expose and discuss the topics studied with conceptual and linguistic precision, and to outline general frameworks that effectively and concisely illustrate the problems faced.
  • Learning skills. At the end of the course, students must have achieved a certain familiarity with the basic concepts of mediation and in particular of family mediation in order to independently acquire new knowledge by consulting the main bibliographic tools that deal with the discipline.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

In relation to the discipline the student should show possession:
- Of mastery of the basic knowledge of mediation;
- Of the understanding of the fundamental concepts of the discipline and the differences with other interventions;
- of the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reason according to the logic of the discipline.


Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

During the course, lectures will alternate between frontal lectures and others with the use of active techniques (e.g., simulations or role playing) that will allow students greater participation and direct involvement. The possibility of classroom group exercises and/or in-depth study of scientific articles will also be considered. Specific in-depth lectures given by experts will be expanded.

Assessment

Written pre-assessment and subsequent mandatory or optional oral assessment in relation to the result of the written test. Specifications on the method of examination and examples of questions are available on the site on the exam page. Students from study courses other than "Psychological Sciences and Techniques" will only be able to take the oral part.

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
