Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the necessary linguistic instruments to comprehend and re-elaborate texts connected to their studies. Particular reference is given to written abilities (comprehension and production).
The course provides for the acquisition of knowledgeability and competencies as established by the B1 Level of International Linguistic Certification.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to read and decode documents in English characterized by the speciality lexicon of Motor, Sports and Health Sciences, take short interviews in a foreign language, request information and respond to requests for information at an intermediate level ( level B1 of the European Reference Framework) independently and in a specialized and non-specialized context by developing theoretical knowledge through the analysis of the main structures of the English sentence in comparative perspective with Italian and other languages studied in the degree course and practical knowledge, (i.e. identifying the main differences between structures in their language and English; providing adequate translation choices in simple sentences; delivering appropriate lexical, syntactical, morphological, and inflected choices in constructing sentences in English.
Based on the skills and competencies described above, the student
- can consolidate the acquisition of the English language at level B1
- can also recognize structures of the language not addressed in the classroom and make assumptions of analysis expressed correctly.
Program
The course aims to prioritise developing written language comprehension skills (reading) by providing authentic, sometimes reduced and adapted materials and tools to move from understanding to production through the recovery and enhancement of the main structures of the English language. The lecturer module (21 hours) analyses the English language's main phonological, morphological and syntactic structures in a comparative/contrastive key.

1 Adjective and Adverbs: comparison of adjectives
2 Present tenses: Present Simple or Continuous?
3 Past tenses: Past Simple, Past Continuous, used to and would, Past Perfect Simple, Past Perfect Continuous
4 Present Perfect: Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Continuous
5 Future Forms: going to, present continuous and will, Present Simple with future meaning, another way to talk about the future (may/might)- future continuous-future perfect-future in the past
6 Modal Verbs: Ability and possibility, Making a guess 1-2, Rules, Necessary and unnecessary actions; Advice and criticism, Permission, Requests and suggestions; offers, promises, and warnings
7 Conditionals: Present and future conditions, unlikely and unreal conditions, past conditions, mixed conditionals; I wish, if only
8 Reported Speech: reported statements, reported questions, reported orders, requests and advice, reporting verb patterns

At the end of the course, the student will be able to
- read and decode documents in English characterized by the specialized lexicon of Exercise, Sports and Health Sciences, hold short interviews in a foreign language, ask for information and respond to requests for information at an intermediate level (level B1 of the European Reference Framework) in independently and in a specialized and non-specialized context.
- attempt to justify incorrect productions in the foreign language through the parametric distinction between the two languages;
- to draw lexical and syntactic information from dictionaries and reference texts
- to present and effectively communicate information in English in the context of the lexicon of sport and motor science specialities, using the lexicon and syntactic structures suitable for everyday situations with a primary degree of complexity;

Students who intend to apply for the validation of English language certifications must apply for validation of exams together with the application for matriculation enrollment in subsequent years/change of course/transfer in entry, or in any case by 20 December of each academic year, at the Student Secretariat according to the procedures defined by that office. If the Degree Course Council approves these acknowledgements without reserve via a resolution of the School, the Student Secretariat will proceed to register the related educational activities without further communication.
If the Degree Course Council decides otherwise than requested, the Student Secretariat will take care to notify the student.
