Learning Objectives
The main learning objectives are to introduce the students to the study of the main statistical technique to better understanding the management of health and social services. This objectives may be reached through a brief explanation of the basis of descriptive statistic. Furthermore, will be presented some issues concerning the principal measures to assess inequalities in the field of health and social care.
Program
- Definitions of statistic
- Fields of application of social statistics;
- How to carry on a research in the field of social care;
- The matrix of data and the types of scales; the statistical tables and their classification;
- The most common graphic representations taken from the teacher's research; some application through softwares Excel an SPSS;
- Statistical reports and average values; examples drawn from the teacher's research;
- Mutability, absolute and relative variability; concentration and its measure;
- Analysis of the relationships between characters: contingency, linear simple correlation, linear simple regression;
- The evaluation of the performance of social and health services and the measurement of inequalities.

- Teaching
The course will be divided into lectures, exercises, workshops and seminars, through the illustration of the main research experiences carried out by the teacher and other social statisticians (performance of services, health mobility, the balance of care (BoC) for the elderly and disabled, efficiency and effectiveness of health and social services).
Therefore, in addition to frontal teaching, the student must have the ability to apply statistical techniques in concrete operational contexts, following the research paths undertaken by the teacher.
