Learning Objectives

Ability to relate nineteenth-century culture with medieval art through the reading of artifacts. Analysis of sources and literature on pre-Renaissance art.

Program

The course aims to analyze the sources and literature that between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries involved the rediscovery of the Middle Ages, primarily through the editions of the Atlases and texts concerning the periodization of the history of art, also through illustrations (chalcographic and / or lithographic ). The Middle Ages is also revisited as a mystical era, linked to craftsmanship in contrast to the industrial reality that was affirming itself. In particular, two phenomena will be identified: German through the movement of the Nazarenes and English through that of the Pre-Raphaelites with attention to applied arts and the birth of design. Interest in the Middle Ages has also affected the antiques market, a phenomenon that will be taken advantage of.

Bridging Courses

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student must demonstrate that he has been able to orient himself with respect to topics and relationships distant in time, relating the nineteenth century with the art of the thirteenth-fourteenth century and the early Renaissance, grasping the relationship with design and applied arts: an attention to the past and the role this played in the construction of the twentieth century.
