Learning Objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the exploration of the origin and evolution of Chinese writing, also intending to provide them with the cultural and methodological tools useful for discovering, interpreting and analyzing classical Chinese texts.

Program

In particular, the following topics will be addressed:

• Invention of Chinese writing in the legendary period

• Written testimonials

• Six writing classifications

• Invention of paper and printing

• Chinese diasystem

• main Chinese schools of thought

The course also aims to study the basic notions of classical language to understand the precise meaning of each sentence and each statement of the literal and philosophical texts, so as to be able to analyze, translate and interpret them.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: knowing and understanding the history and evolution of the Chinese language and the fundamentals of the grammar of the classical Chinese language.

Applying knowledge and understanding: applying knowledge and understanding by producing and supporting arguments about the object of study.

Making judgments: formulating hypotheses and determining autonomous judgments on the evolutionary path of Chinese and on the meaning of written production in the classical Chinese language.

Communication skills: communicate the acquired knowledge clearly and with the specific language of the discipline.

Learning skills: being able to autonomously deal with texts in the classical Chinese language and recognize its influences on modern Chinese.

Assessment

Learning outcomes will be assessed through an oral test and assessed on the basis of the knowledge of the text chosen for the test.

In particular, the following skills will be assessed:

- translation skills

- analysis and comment on the main syntactic and grammatical aspects of the text.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
