Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide basic knowledge on the transition from Latin to Italian and the linguistic analysis of Medieval texts.
The course will focus on historical italian grammar, in relation to the passage from Latin to the roman languages. In their broad articulation, the lessons will treat two basic questions problems: when and why it is possible to determine the birth of a language; what difference exists between literary and documentary texts, with relative differences of method in their analysis.
Program
The lessons will initially focus on the main linguistic tracts that caracterize the transition from Latin to Italian, and will further analyze the most ancient documents in Italian language and some of the most important examples of Italian literature from the 13th to the 14th century (Bono Giamboni, Guido Faba, Guittone d'Arezzo, il Novellino, Boccaccio).
