Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course consists in the knowledge of Caravaggio's works not confined to the personality of the artist and his life events, but related to his era,
that is, the reality of Rome and beyond in the Counter-Reformation era, as well as the coexistence of different ways of conceiving the operea of art, from extreme realism to the proposal of an ideal and placated world.
Program
The activity of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio from his family's place of derivation, is investigated: the 'apprenticeship at Pederzano of Venetian training, then the arrival in Rome in the last decade of the sixteenth century with later a series of adventures that took him to Naples, Malta, and Sicily until his death. His activity should be investigated in relation to the Counter-Reformation era, the demands of the market with the stabilization of collecting. In particular, a context that made room for classical culture through Ludovico Carracci as well as contemporary artists such as Giovanni Baglione and Orazio Gentileschi will be reconstructed: the reconstruction of a reality that made room for different conceptions of art.
Bridging Courses
