Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with knowledge about the characteristics of traditional civilization, philosophical reflections, culture and social life in the Chinese world. A number of thematic insights will be addressed in order to learn about China's past and interpret that of the present, particularly aspects inherent in the economic, political and cultural modernization of Chinese society in relation to the changing world environment and international influences.

Program

The following topics will be explored in depth during the course:

- Brief introduction of China

- The problems of multiethnic society and pluralism,

- Tibet, Uighurs, Hong Kong and Taiwan

- festivals and anniversaries

- Confucianism between past and present,

- the education system,

- social stereotypes on the issues of sentiment and marriage,

- concubinage-the status of women,

- family planning,

- Chinese cuisine,

- censorship in China,

- The social credit system,

- Chinese music and opera,

- religion in China,

- the phenomenon of Chinese immigration and the Chinese presence in Italy,

- China's role in the world economic scenario and its relationship with the Vatican.

Students will also be introduced to the contemporary Chinese world, leading them to grasp continuities and changes recorded over the centuries through the analysis of some social and economic phenomena and the economic and political relations between China and the Western world.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: the student knows and understands

the definition of Chinese cultural identity.

Applied knowledge and understanding (applying knowledge and understanding): the student develops analytical skills with respect to the topics covered in the course.

Autonomy of judgment (making judgements): the student is able to determine autonomous judgments about Chinese cultural phenomena.

Communication skills (communication skills): the student can clearly and unambiguously communicate his or her knowledge, can argue and express his or her considerations to the Chinese cultural context.

Learning skills (learning abilities): the student acquires the methodological tools and bibliographic-critical skills necessary to develop his/her own research autonomy.
