Learning Objectives

The course aims to illustrate the moments, the methods and the means through which the recovery and the study of classical antiquity in European culture from the 14th to the 20th century were matured;  focus on the discovery of Greek art.

Program

The topics of the course cover antiquarian studies, the history of antiquities collecting, early excavation projects, and the development of the concept of 'archaeology' and 'archaeological source'. The course will then focus on the critical fortune and impact in the Western culture of Greek and Roman antiquities, considering the corpora antiquitatum. Special attention will be given to the study of the Parthenon.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The candidate must demonstrate through an interview to have learned and processed independently the topics covered during the lessons, applying them to the critical discussion of the various aspects considered. These concern both the mechanisms of the recovery of the classical past in its material evidences as well as the joints for their critical study. In these areas the candidate will have to show that he/she is able to adequately recognize the differences peculiar to different centuries, the materials to which critical thought has been addressed, applying them to the monumental and artistic manifestations of ancient Greece and of ancient Roman world.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

The test of skills and abilities includes, therefore, that the candidate knows how to identify objects and monuments, the time of their production, and their cultural relationship.

They will give rise to evaluations of excellence: the student's possession of good critical and in-depth skills; the ability to connect the main topics dealt; the use of an appropriate language with respect to the specific nature of the discipline.

They will give rise to discrete evaluations: the student's possession of a basic knowledge of the contents; a relative critical capacity and connection between the themes dealt; the use of an appropriate language.

They will give rise to sufficient evaluations: the achievement of minimal knowledge on the subjects dealt with by the student, even if there are some training gaps; the use of inappropriate language.

They will give rise to negative evaluations: difficulty of orientation of the student with respect to the topics dealt with in the exam texts; training gaps; the use of inappropriate language.

Students who have registered their disability certification or DSA certification at the Inclusion and Right to Study Office may ask to use concept maps (for key words) during the exam.
