Learning Objectives

Acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge for managing databases and software for data analysis. At the end of the course, the student should be able of creating autonomously a dataset, manage variables, and, after uploading it on statistical software, running descriptive analyses.

Program

Lessons will be delivered in the first semester and the arguments are listed in time order in follows:

  • The concept of software. A brief introduction to the universal calculator. (3 hours)
  • Variables and measurement scales and the concept of scoring. (2 hours)
  • Data, data types, and their treatment. Boolean logical operators and logical applications. (3 hours)
  • Boolean logical operators and logical applications and their use in Excel. (2 hours)
  • Excel and the organization of a database: the insertion, manipulation and coding of variables. (3 hours)
  • Descriptive analyses and frequency graphs. (2 hours)
  • R studio: loading a database and managing a data frame. Descriptive analyses and graphs. (3 hours)
  • Jamovi: loading a database and managing a dataframe. Descriptive analyses and graphs. (2 hours)
  • Reflections on data science and machine learning and their relevance (debate). (2 hours)
  • General review. (2 hours)
  • Bridging Courses

    Nothing.

    Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

    - Knowledge and understanding: having acquired the fundamental concepts of Boolean logic and their application in Excel and statistical software. Having acquired knowledge regarding data science.

    - Applying knowledge and understanding: having acquired the ability to manipulate variables and create a dataframe, managing it on the main software studied.

    - Making judgments: having acquired the ability to use knowledge and concepts to describe the results of the main descriptive statistics used in the psychological field.

    - Communication skills: having acquired the specific language for describing the variables and results of descriptive statistics in the psychological field.

    - Learning skills: Upon completion of the course the students should have acquired good autonomy in the management and manipulation of the variables within a dataframe. They should also have to be autonomous in the interpretation of descriptive statistics and graphs.

    Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

    Teaching

Lectures and practical lessons on PC. It is advisable to come to lessons with your own PC.

    Innovative teaching methods

    Debate

    Problem Solving

    Attendance

No compulsory attendance, but recommended attendance (practical exercises to be followed preferably in person).

    Course books

Pastore, M. (2015). Analisi dei dati in psicologia. Il mulino. ISBN: 978-88-15-25898-4. (Cap. 1-2-3)

    Assessment

The student will have to complete the first part of the exam through an exercise to be considered a pre-exam. The delivery of the exercise within the expected time allows access to the written exam.

The exam will include 3 open questions, two theoretical and one that asks to comment on the output of an analysis performed on one of the software presented during the course.

The evaluation criteria are the following: - relevance and effectiveness of the answers in relation to the contents of the program; the degree of articulation in writing of the answer, adequacy of the language used; applicative/operational capacity.

The evaluation is expressed with the formula "Approved/Not approved".

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

    Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

    Teaching

To allow non-attending students to compensate for what is covered during the lessons with independent study, we recommend using all the materials included in the blended platform (slides, exercises, supplementary material, particularly useful for fully understanding the contents of the program)

    Attendance
