Learning Objectives

The course aims to introduce Cognitive Neuroscience by providing the neurophysiological basis of normal and pathological cognitive processes. The different methods used by neuroscience to study the brain and behavior will be illustrated.

Program

•    Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience, brief history, overview of the nervous system, and focus on the brain (Lesson 1)
•    Behavioral methods (Lesson 2)
•    Electrophysiological methods (Lesson 3)
•    Neuroimaging methods (Lesson 4)
•    Elements of neurology (Lecture 5)
•    Brain plasticity (Lecture 6)
•    Vision and perception (Lecture 7)
•    Object and face recognition (Lecture 8)
•    Language and aphasias (Lesson 9)
•    Reading and writing (Lesson 10)
•    Motor control (Lesson 11)
•    Attention and neglect (Lesson 12)
•    Memory systems (Lesson 13 and 14)
•    Executive functions and frontal lobes (Lecture 15)
•    Sleep and biological rhythms (Lesson 16)
•    Consciousness (Lecture 17)
•    Psychophysiology of emotions (Lecture 18)
•    Examination Simulation (Lecture 19)

Bridging Courses

It is necessary to have taken the exam of Elementi di Neuroscienze (or Fondamenti anatomo fisiologici dell’attività psichica)

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The students are expected to know:

- the cognitive functions and their neuro-physiological bases

- the Neuroscience methods used to study the brain

- how to evaluate normal and pathological behavior in the main cognitive and neuro-functional models presented during the course

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

In addition to the slides, which are part of the study materials, scientific articles will be provided and videos shown

Attendance

Attendance is optional but is highly recommended

2. Bear, M.F., Connors, B.W., & Paradiso M.A. Esplorando il Cervello (quarta edizione). Edra. (Chapters 19, 20; Chapter 15 pag. 563-570; references to chapters 21, 24 e 25).

The slides are part of the study material

Suggested reading:

Rossi, S. (2020). Il cervello elettrico. Le sfide della neuromodulazione. Raffaello Cortina Editore.

Piazza, M., & Pavani, F. (2022). Le neuroscienze cognitive. Come il cervello genera la mente. Carocci editore.

Assessment

Written test with 15 multiple choice questions + 2 open questions. Duration 60 minute

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Teaching

To allow non-attending students to compensate by self-studying what is done during the lectures, we recommend using all materials included in the blended platform (slides, tutorials, supplementary materials) that are particularly useful for fully understanding the program content.
