Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic notions of the principles of formal and molecular genetics for understanding the mechanisms of duplication and transmission of hereditary characteristics. The lessons will also delve into various aspects of the structure and functioning of genes, their interactions and the mechanisms underlying inheritance and genetic variability. Finally, gene mutations and chromosomal mutations will be analysed. This course provides an essential foundation for better understanding and studying complex biological processes.
Program
1. Heredity and Mendelian laws
2. The Gene
3. Correlation between genotype and phenotype
4. Chromosomes
5. Meiosis and recombination
6. Mosaicism
7. Gene mutations
8. Structural rearrangements and aneuploidies
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- Knowledge of the basic principles of genetics for understanding the transmission of hereditary characteristics.
- Ability to autonomously apply the theoretical knowledge learned
- Ability to evaluate and interpret genetic analyses
- Ability to relate to industry professionals
- Ability to independently document in order to understand genetic problems and identify innovative solutions.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
The course includes lectures in which the teacher explains the concepts and offers reflections and exercises (clinical cases) to facilitate understanding. Students are invited to attend lessons to request clarification from the teacher.
- Attendance
Attending lessons is not mandatory but is strongly recommended.
- Assessment
The assessment of learning involves a closed-ended written test.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
