Learning Objectives

The course aims to address the different methods of analysis and interpretation of works of art thanks to the acquisition of the essential philological, historical and sociological tools. It also aims to provide students with an accurate overview of the main methodologies of historical-artistic research and the most significant stages of the Italian and European critical debate in different eras.

Program

We will address notions regarding the definition of a work of art, the specificity of materials and artistic techniques, iconography and iconology, the concept of style in relation to works and different figurative languages, the context and the problem of decontextualization, the dynamics that have regulated the relationships between artists and clients in different times and cultural realities, the value of the sources. The evaluation of works and creators according to the orientations of artistic literature and the history of art criticism, the construction of artistic history and its periodization, and the protagonists of the main stages will also be addressed.

Some lessons will be dedicated to exercises in reading and understanding the works, applying the different approach methods presented in class.
