After a general introduction on the French novel between the 19th and 20th centuries, the course will explore the structures of the 20th century novel through the forms of memory writing in the work of Proust and Perec.

French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries: historical context; literary, cultural and philosophical currents; most representative authors.

Proust: the author, the works. À la recherche du temps perdu: genesis, publication difficulties, genres, themes. Reading and analysis of the first part of 'Combray'.

Perec: the author, the works. W ou le souvenir d'enfance: genesis, genre. reading and integral analysis of the texte.

Knowledge of the socio-literary context of the 19th and 20th centuries, its literary movements and most representative works.
Knowledge of two texts representative of memory writing and their ideological and historical-literary context.
Acquisition of the notions and skills for the analysis of a literary text and its contextualisation
Acquisition of the ability to use the language of literary criticism and the history of ideas to comment on literary texts
Ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to other texts and periods of French literature, gradually achieving the necessary preparation to continue studies in the Master's degree.

Assessment

Oral examination aimed at verifying knowledge of the topics covered during the course, the ability to contextualise the cultural and literary phenomena of the 19th and 20th centuries, the ability to critically summarise the reference bibliography, and the use of specific language.
 The candidate will be judged according to the following evaluation grid:

-Responses not entirely adequately to the questions asked and shows some deficiencies in content, textual analysis and exposition in the language: 18-21
-Responses with ease to the questions asked but shows no particular ability to make the appropriate connections between literary currents, authors and texts. Exposition is not entirely satisfactory a: 22-24
-Responseses comprehensively to questions posed but does not demonstrate sufficient command or maturity in making appropriate connections between literary currents authors and texts. Exposition is clear: 25-27
-Responses thoroughly to questions, demonstrates excellent command in making appropriate connections. Exposition is very clear and the discourse well structured: 28-30
-Responses in depth to questions, shows excellent command and critical sense in making appropriate connections. Exposition demonstrates considerable ownership and fluency of language: 30 cum laude

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
