Learning Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the theoretical and practical principles of general and inorganic chemistry.The primary goal is to acquire a solid comprehension of chemical formulas and the connections between chemical structures and their properties. Emphasis will be placed to chemical equilibria in solution, such as acid-base reactions and solubility of inorganic compounds. Overall, the course seeks to offer an extensive overview of modern chemistry, with specific emphasis to its  interdisciplinary aspects and significance.

01 - Structure of the matter: atoms, atomic parameters, elements and compounds.

02 - Atomic weight, molecular weight, mole, composition percantage, empirical formula, molecular formula.

03 - Inorganic compounds: oxides, hydroxides, acids, hydrogen compounds, salts.

04 - Chemical reactions: balancing, yield, stoichiometry.

05 - Atomic structure: orbitals, electronic configuration.

06 - Periodic table of the elements, periodic properties, octet rule.

07 - Chemical bond: classification (intramolecular, intermolecular).

08 - Covalent bond, molecular geometry: VSEPR model, molecular polarity.

09 - Valence bond theory, elements of hybridation model.

10 - Ionic bond and metallic bond.

11 - Redox reactions.

12 - Intermolecular interactions: Van der Waals forces, hydrogen bond.

13 - Physical states: solid, liquid, gas. Changes of state.

14 - Solutions: solute-solvent interactions, concentration measures.

15 - Strong electrolytes, speciation, colligative properties.

16 - Chemical thermodynamics: enthalpy, entropy, free energy.

17 - Elements of kinetics: activation energy and catalysis.

18 - Chemical equilibrium. Equilibrium constant, Le Chatellier principles.

19 - Acid and bases in aqueous solution: pH calculation of solution containing strong or weak acids or bases.

20 - Saline hydrolysis.

21 - Buffer solutions and pH measurement techniques.

22 - Solubility equilibrium: saturated solutions, solubility and solubility product

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1. Knowledge and understanding skills. Students must be able to describe the microscopic and macroscopic properties of the matter, highlighting the structure/property relationships. They will have to prove the comprehension of the basic principles behind the chemical bond, the nomenclature of chemical compounds and the basic principles of chemical equilibria and chemical reactions (redox and acid-base), including the electronic structure of atoms and molecules. Furthermore, they will have to prove a complete understanding of the periodic properties of elements (periodic table), the properties of the three states of matter (liquid, solid and gas) and intermolecular forces involved, including the basic principles of thermodynamics and kinetics of the solid state. In particular, they will have to be familiar with concepts such as mole, concentration, pH, solubility and chemical equilibrium. The achievement of these abilities will be tested through the assessment procedures.

D2. Application of knowledge and understanding. Students must be familiar with the correct chemistry language, and to apply the stoichiometric calculation in order to determine the equilibrium state of a chemical system (yield of a reaction, pH of a solution, solubility of an insoluble electrolyte). The achievement of these abilities will be tested through the assessment procedures.

D3. Judgement autonomy. The student must be able to critically evaluate the role of the substances that compose a chemical system, such as a buffer solution, a multi-component system or a simple analytical titration, and then be able to interpret more complex systems. These skills will be tested both with the written test and through targeted oral application questions.

D4. Communication skills. Students must be able to clearly describe the physical-chemical phenomena learned in the course with appropriate language and examples.

D5. Learning skills. Students must be able to critically and independently build their own skills and scientific background by using the teaching material provided by the teacher and any other material (book or scientific article) provided. These abilities will be stimulated by the teacher proposing and resolving numeric problems.

Teaching

The course will consist of both lectures on the fundamental concepts of chemistry and problem-solving activities designed to help students identify the structure of the most common chemical species.

In addition to the recommended textbooks, teaching materials such as slides, lecture notes, exercises, and bibliographies, as well as relevant communications from the lecturer, can be found on the Moodle platform > blended.uniurb.it

Basic knowledges of mathematic and physic are requested.

Assessment

The assessment of learning involves a practical assignment and an oral examination.

The purpose of the practical assignment is to assess the student's proficiency in balancing chemical reactions, performing stoichiometric calculations, calculating solution concentrations, managing chemical equilibria in solution - particularly acid-base reactions - and solving problems related to the solubility of ionic compounds. The exercise consists of six exercises based on the course curriculum. The practical assessment will be evaluated using qualitative grades (barely sufficient, sufficient, more than sufficient, fair, good, excellent) and will determine eligibility for the oral examination.

The purpose of the oral examination is to assess the student's preparation on the theoretical concepts presented in class. The student will be asked to provide appropriate examples for each studied topic, demonstrating a complete understanding of the concepts. The oral examination is graded on a scale from 0 to 30.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
