Learning Objectives

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

- Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione: (knowledge and understanding) At the end of the course the students must demonstrate to have acquired the knowledge of the English vocabulary presented in class and its use. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

- Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: the students must demonstrate to be able to apply their knowledge both for written and spoken English. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

- Autonomia di giudizio: (making judgements) the students must be able to apply the knowledge acquired and to face different dynamics making their own judgements. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

- Abilità comunicative: (communication skills) the students must demonstrate to be able to communicate effectively thanks to the vocabulary and structures learnt during the course.  This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

- Capacità di apprendere: (learning skills) The students must have developed appropriate learning skills so that they can deepen their knowledge. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

Program

The student will reach a full C1 level through some listening activities of authentic conversations, videos and films, authentic readings and practice of writing and translation skills. We will also focus on various types of activities to master speaking skills with conversations, debates, presentations, possible interviews, etc., covering various topics.

Through reading, writing and listening exercises the students will expand their vocabulary.

During the course, the student will learn to write essays in academic English and will be also asked to complete written and translations assignments both in class and at home.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the language assistant in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the language assistant specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Non attending students are required to use the same materials as attending students.

Oral exam:

Knowledge of three of the five books listed above (two for attending students)  and of the topics presented in the readings of the packets. The students must see at least four of the films listed below (three for attending students):

Notes

The material on Blended is an integration of our course books.

Listening test

- A listening test with 10 questions (multiple choice + true/false + open answers)

Written exam (duration 3 hours):

1. A text of at least 200 words

2. A 100 word translation from Italian into English

Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries allowed.

Oral exam:

Content of 3 books (2 for attending stuents) + 4 movies  (3 for attending students) + topics presented in class, in the readings and translations packets and during our lab sessions.
