Learning Objectives

The course aims to gradually introduce students to the formalism, terminology and logical tools of mathematics, prerequisites that are indispensable for the proper assimilation of many of the disciplines with an economic, statistical and financial content that the student will have to deal with later on. In addition to accustoming students to the practical use of the tools of algebra and differential calculus, the course aims to educate them in a rigorous and logically consistent approach to problems, through the logical-deductive method typical of mathematics. The formal treatment of topics will be preceded by a heuristic and intuitive approach, and for many of them possible applications to the description of economic, social and financial systems and processes will be indicated.

Program

The purpose of the tutorial classes is to propose exercises and problems to apply and assimilate the concepts learned in the General Mathematics course. Situations and problems are also proposed to appreciate the use of mathematical concepts and methods in describing economic and social systems.

Bridging Courses

General Mathematics tutorial classes run alongside the 8-credit course (these are two additional hours each week plus 4 hours in the last week before winter break) and are an integral part of it. In the first three weeks, a review is offered on exercises related to elementary functions, equations and inequalities. Then exercises are proposed in parallel with the topics covered in the theory classes, and we get to perform in the classroom some of the exercises proposed in the written tests of previous academic years.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

- Knowledge and ability to understand: by the end of the course, students should have acquired knowledge and ability to understand the main parts of the program.

- Applied Knowledge and Ability to Understand: students should be able to apply the mathematical methods described in the program to solving problems and exercises, as well as the ability to translate into the symbols and formalism of mathematics real-world situations, especially in the economic, financial, and social fields, devise simple mathematical or formal models or graphs to illustrate and study relationships among variables.

- Autonomy of judgment: students should have the ability to connect in integrated and unified patterns the knowledge acquired during the course and to confront complex problems through the logical and formal tools made available by mathematics.

- Communication skills: Students should acquire clear and effective communication skills through a good command of vocabulary related to the topics covered during the course.

- Learning skills: Students should have developed good learning skills, enabling them to independently deepen the knowledge acquired during the course by tackling subsequent paths of personalized study.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures, blackboard exercises, exercises to be done independently and then in class

Innovative teaching methods

Exercises and problem situations are proposed, including those related to the description of economic, social and ecological systems, which students are urged to tackle first independently and then to confront with fellow students and lecturer through the mechanism of “learning by doing”

Assessment

The tutorials are needed to be able to take the written part of the General Mathematics exam

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Course books

Exercises and examples offered in the books recommended for the General Mathematics course, as well as completed exercises (also taken from exam texts) downloadable from the Moodle platform ' blended.uniurb.it
