The course aims at guiding students through the analysis of various translations into Italian of Shakespeare's sonnets, highlighting the different solutions chosen in time by translators and focusing on particular stylistic issues such as the rendition of the author's pentameters, rhyming scheme, metaphors etc. The constant relationship between theory and practice will also be stressed, so as to reinforce students' awareness of the mutability of translational results.

The course will be held in English.

Various sonnets will be analysed and their available translations discussed in order to find out the theoretical (or pre-theoretical) principles followed by translators in order to render the original texts for specific cultural targets. Particular emphasis will be laid on the special language of literature.

Students will be involved in individual or group assignments.  

The written exam must be passed before the correspondent oral exam.
