The course aims at introducing students to the history of the English language and at equipping them with the ability to understand and discuss the role of cultural, political and social forces in the development of the language. The focus will be on the contemporary period and on the linguistic phenomena resulting from the Anglo-Chinese relations.
The course will be held in English.

Students will
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione (knowledge and understanding):
-be able to describe the historical development of the English language and interpret the history of the English language as a cultural subject
Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione (applying knowledge and understanding):
-be able to define the different phases of the history of the English language and to concretely identify them

-be able to critically discuss the role of cultural, political and social forces in the development of the English language
Abilità comunicative (communication skills):
-be able to understand a talk (given in English) and to read and understand academic essays (written in English) on the topics of the course.
-be able to discuss the topics of the course in English, expressing and explaining their point of view

-be able to monitor and evaluate their own learning process
-(attending students) know how to increase their self-confidence to succeed
-(attending students) know specific strategies to improve their memory and make sense of complex information
