Nineteenth-century England is a period of change and progress. New discoveries in science and technology challenged traditions, religious creeds and the social fabric of the nation. It saw the birth of new influential sciences such as economics and geology; it profoundly changed the political landscape; it challenged the way people looked at questions of selfhood and nationality. It is the century of Charles Darwin, female emancipation and empire. 

This course will concentrate on a series of related themes of a century that was essentially a period of transition towards the beginnings of modern industrial society. The Romantics greeted with enthusiasm the possibilities of the new world order which was heralded by the French Revolution. Later during the century Victorian men and women were acutely aware of the cultural change taking place and, in their writings, reflected a self-consciousness of their being part of this process. 

The course aims at acquainting the students with a series of important texts, and guide them towards analysing those texts in the historical and cultural context.

5 - The concept of duty and the idea of Empire

- Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione (knowledge and understanding): lo studente conosce i fondamenti storico-culturali e socio-antropologici essenziali, nonché gli strumenti critico-letterari, per affrontare la cultura inglese del periodo.

- Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione (applying knowledge and understanding): lo studente ha le competenze linguistiche, culturali e letterarie per la descrizione e analisi della cultura inglese.

- Autonomia di giudizio (making judgements): lo studente possiede capacità critiche che lo rendono in grado di analizzare e valutare testi di argomento letterario e culturale, e sa esprimere opinioni autonome su temi socio-culturali riguardanti vari periodi storici inglesi.

- Abilità comunicative (communication skills): lo studente ha un atteggiamento aperto a realtà e epoche diverse e sa usare il linguaggio settoriale.

- Capacità di apprendimento (learning skills): lo studente acquisisce gli strumenti metodologici e le competenze bibliografico-critiche necessarie per sviluppare ulteriormente il proprio ambito di conoscenze.
