The course aims at introducing students to the history of the English language and at equipping them with the ability to understand and discuss the role of cultural, political and social forces in the development of the language.

Students will
"Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione" (knowledge and understanding):
-be able to describe the historical development of the English language and interpret the history of the English language as a cultural subject
"Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione" (applying knowledge and understanding):
-be able to identify and define the different phases of the history of the English language
Autonomia di giudizio (making judgements):
-be able to discuss the role of cultural, political and social forces in the development of the English language
"Abilità comunicative" (communication skills):
-be able to understand a talk (given in English) and to read and understand academic essays (written in English) on the topics of the course.
-be able to discuss the topics of the course in English, expressing and explaining their point of view
"Capacità di apprendimento" (learning skills):
-be able to monitor and evaluate their own learning process
-(attending students) know how to increase their self-confidence to succeed
-(attending students) know specific strategies to improve their memory and make sense of complex information
