Obiettivi Formativi

Given the historical, cultural and literary weight of Shakespeare, no secondary school English course can but include a Shakespearean play. The course aims to bring university MA students of the 'linguistica e dicattica' curriculum to grasp and use teaching tools to transmit meaning to a class of ‘scuola secondaria' and to help widen and deepen school pupils' knowledge of and competence in a given playtext. Together with pedagogical and psychological insights, the course will accompany students through a profession-oriented path, in order to show various didactic strategies and the teacher's necessary ‘upgrading' in the field, so as to transform their knowledge into professional competence.

Programma

1. Why Shakespeare's plays?
1.1 The role of the Canon
1.2 Shakespeare still ‘our contemporary'? (political, post-modern, postcolonial Shakespeare)
1.3 Multi-cultural and world-wide Shakespeare
1.4 Text and context from production to reception: the semiosis of cultural transmission
2. The Plays
2.1 Drama and theatre. Tragedy and comedy.
2.2 A thematic presentation of the plays (Ham. and Tem.)
2.3 Textual (and theatrical) analysis of some relevant passages from both plays
2.4 A multi-disciplinary approach
3. Towards the theatre: From an excerpt to a whole play
3.1 Analysis and discussion of some anthologies most widely used in schools
3.2 Reading aloud and teaching.
3.3 How the media can help to understand a play.
3.4 How to ‘direct' a theatre experience
3.5 To 'do' Shakespearean theatre at school.
4. Students' oral presentation of some of the above-mentioned points

Attività di Supporto

Various phases of the course will be accompanied by videos either from the Web or available at the CLA.
If possible, a theatre workshop will also be held.

Lectures and seminars

Obblighi

Students are warmly invited to attend lessons and to read both plays before the course starts. Before the end the course, each student (or group of students) presents orally (in English) - and practice with their fellow-students - a didactic plan for the teaching of a given passage from either play. This will be evaluated and will concur to the final mark.
At least two weeks before the date chosen for the oral exam, each student presents an individually written analysis and discussion (in English) of two school anthologies (limited to the topic of the course), of about 1000 words. This task will also participate in the final evaluation.

During the oral exams, students must be able to discuss their essay and answer questions related to the whole programme, which also includes the following readings:

Gibson, Rex, Teaching Shakespeare: A Handbook for Teachers, Cambridge: CUP, 2005 (especially chs. 1-3, 7-9, 11).
Mullini, R., R. Zacchi, Introduzione allo studio del teatro inglese, Napoli: Liguori, 2003 (part 2).
Wallis, Mick, Simon Shepherd, Studying Plays, Second Edition, London: Arnold, 2002.

Shakespearean plays: Hamlet; The Tempest (any English or bilingual edition; Oxford and Arden recommended)

Disabilità e DSA
