Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to bring students, who are expected to have a C1 level competence of English already, to consider the richness and at the same time the apparent ‘fluctuation' of lexical meaning in English usage, in order to make them familiar and conversant with old and new tools offered by the traditional book industry and by computerized databases. The major purpose is to help students familiarize with methodologies and practices of traditional and new learning and working instruments, so that they can use what is nowadays available for such different tasks as translation (to and from L2) and writing in L2. The considerations deriving from this process properly belong in a pedagogic route towards the acquisition of both competence and capacity (for translating and writing) as part of the explorative practice and subsequent acquisition and proficient use of L2 lexicon and syntax.

1.1 Dictionaries, Thesauri, corpora
1.2 Monolingual corpora
1.3 Parallel corpora
1.4 Comparable corpora
1.5 Web available software
2. Language in context
2.1 Collocation
2.2 Colligation and syntax
2.3 Concordances: type e token
3. Textual typologies and consequent choice and use of tools
4. Workshops for the discussion of printed and electronic material.
5. Language laboratory (in groups) to produce samples of translations and compositions.

Attività di Supporto

Dr Giovanna Carloni will hold some seminars, especially during the 2010 class time.

English language tutorials held by "Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici" (Dott. Francesca Carducci and Dott. Morag McCarron for I-year students; dott. Christine Di Staola for II-year students)

Obblighi

Students are warmly invited to attend lessons. At least two weeks before the date chosen for the oral exam, each student hands in a 150-word translation (I year), or a c. 500-word composition in English (II year), accompanying it with an English ‘diary' concerning at least 15 and 30 lexical choices, respectively (how choices were made, which tools were used - dictionaries, thesauri, concordances, corpora; which principles determined each choice).

The passages for translation and the topics for composition will later be posted on line in the professor's "Materiale didattico". This task will participate in the final evaluation.

Testi di studio

During the oral exams, students must be able to discuss their written task and answer questions related to the whole programme, which includes a choice of two of the following readings:

Jackson, Howard, Lexicography: An Introduction, London, Routledge, 2002.
Teubert, Wolfgang, Anna Cermakova, Corpus Linguistics: A Short Introduction, London, Continuum, 2007.
Bernardini, Silvia, Competence, capacity, corpora. A study in corpus-aided language learning. Bologna: CLUEB, 2000.

accertamento

Oral exam in English (the written task will participate in the final evaluation), possible in itinere tests; oral language assessment and written exam according to the rules applying to the various years.

Disabilità e DSA

Non attending students are invited to get in touch with Professor Mullini either by phone (during office hours), or by email.

Non attending students are required to study all books in the list. At least two weeks before the date chosen for the oral exam, each student hands in a 200-word translation (I year), or a c. 700-word composition in English (II year), accompanying it with an English ‘diary' concerning at least 30 and 50 lexical choices, respectively (how choices were made, which tools were used - dictionaries, thesauri, concordances, corpora; which principles determined each choice).
