Obiettivi Formativi

This course is organised in three modules. The first one (yielding 5 credits and corresponding to the first half of the whole course which can be attended separately from the other module) aims at providing the basic tools and concepts for the analysis of firms' behaviour and performance within and across industries. The main characteristics and evolution of Italy's industrial system will also be overviewed. The second module will go deeper into the analysis of topics of industrial organisation and industrial policy, with specific reference to the role of technical change and internationalisation in the evolution of industries. The third module will focus on the evolution of specific industries

o The structure and characteristics of Italian industry
o Monopoly and regulation
o Oligopoly, market structure and market power
o Strategic behaviour: price discrimination, deterrence, predation and cooperation
o Market structure and innovation

Second module
o Innovation and industrial dynamics
o Internationalisation and the evolution of industries
o Sectoral patterns of firm behaviour
o Antitrust and competition policies
o Industrial policies for innovation and structural change

Third module
o National, regional and sectoral innovation systems
o Innovation and the evolution of specific industries

Modalità didattiche

Lectures in Italian. In the case that international students attend the course, arrangements can be made with the course instructor for meetings to assist English-speaking students in their exam preparation.

- Modules 2 and 3: Additional readings in English will have to be agreed upon with the course instructor

Modalità di
accertamento

Separate exams can be given, and credits can be obtained, for module 1 and module 2. Oral examination (either in Italian or in English) . A paper can be discussed in English as part of module 2.
