Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims at bringing students to realize the complex aspects of verbal interaction through the analysis of various conversation strategies. The concepts of speech acts, politeness strategies, implicature etc. will be dealt with from a theoretical standpoint and checked in a play text rich in problematic dialogic situations. The major purpose is to help students improve their awareness of the implications of social encounters, and also to offer them tools to analyse various type texts, towards a proficient use of L2.

The course will also include a brief study of the relevance of punctuation for efficacious and correct writing.

1.3 speech acts
1.4 taxonomy of speech acts
1.5 indirect speech acts
2. Grice's Cooperation maxims
2.1 Flouting a maxim
2.2 Implicature
3. Politeness
3.1 Cultural differences
3.2 Politeness strategies
3.3 Negative and positive politeness

3.4 Face Threatening Acts and how to make or avoid them

4. Pragmatic analysis of dramatic dialogues as made-up examples of conversation

Eventuali Propedeuticità

The written exam must be passed before the correspondent oral exam.

Students are warmly invited to attend lessons.

The set readings (all to be read) are:

Peter Grundy, Doing Pragmatics, London, Hodder Education, 3rd edition, 2008.

Harold Pinter, The Dumb Waiter, London, Faber and Faber, any year (the text is also included in The Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol. 2)

Lynne Truss, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, New York, Gotham Books, 2004 (for the punctuation part)

A 'dispensa' with various chapters by relevant pragmaticists will be made available in the future, together with further passages for analysis.

More details about  which chapters students are required to  study will be specified during lessons and posted on the faculty site (in professor Mullini's 'Materiale didattico').

During the oral exams, which will be held in English, students must be able to answer questions based on the set readings and to analyse a passage submitted to them on the spot.

Students are kindly requested to bring the list of their readings with them

Disabilità e DSA

Obblighi

Non attending students are required to study all books and 'dispense' in the list (but see further information that will be posted on the web).
