Learning Objectives

The course aims to deepen the knowledge and research techniques developed in the field of Visual Sociology.

Starting from the setting up of the research design, the course deepens the epistemological dimension of empirical research of a phenomenological nature through the use of qualitative methodologies identified in the distinction "work on images" and "work with images".

On this basis, practical elements are provided for the realisation of empirical research based on visual methodologies with particular reference to the techniques of subjective image production and photo-elicitation.

Theoretical and practical tools for content analysis and presentation of research results are also provided.

Program

Introduction to Visual Sociolgy.

Setting up of the empirical research design (delimitation of the research object, hypothesis and research questions, research methodology based on Visual Sociolgy, sampling and empirical target groups, photo stimulus interviews and subjective image production, content analysis, empirical generalisations).

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

1. Knowledge and ability to understand: the knowledge to be acquired concerns the field of Visual Sociology understood as an autonomous discipline and as a methodological apparatus with particular reference to the construction of the research design and the application of the fundamental techniques of visual methodology.
Ph. students acquire this basic knowledge through attendance of lectures, the study of texts discussed in the classroom and in class exercises.

1.2.  Ph. students deepen their study and empirical analysis through classroom practice.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: through the ability to carry out an interview based on visual methodologies and to analyse its content.
2.1. Skills acquired through laboratory practice in the classroom.
3. Judgement skills: critical reflection on how to carry out empirical research based on visual methodologies and self-observation in conducting the interview from a non-directive perspective.
3.1. This judgement ability is to be applied in the classroom discussion with the lecturer and colleagues during the exercises.
4. Communication skills: Ph. students are called upon to interact in the classroom through questions, exchanges with colleagues, presentation of the results of the research carried out in the exercise.
4.1. Skills that are practised in the classroom by organising discussion and exercise moments.
5. Learning ability: Ph. students are required to adopt a critical learning method capable of connecting theoretical competences and empirical analysis, moving towards the specification of autonomous thinking.
5.1. Skills to be enhanced through argumentation with the lecturer and other Ph. students.
