Learning Objectives

The course objective is to provide the students the  knowledge and skills required regarding the methodologies used to assess the physical fitness components and their applications in sports setting. The course will include both theorical and practical applications of physical fitness assessment in sports setting.

In particular, the course objectives are to know and understand:

  • the issues related to physical fitness assessment and its application both in amateur and top level sports, and in different age groups or populations;
  • how to choose and perform physical fitness assessment in sport;
  • how to perform assessments in both lab and in field setting;
  • how to interpret to understand the results of the tests and their application in exercise prescription.

Program

Evaluation of sport, its characteristics (2 CFU)

  • Movement and physiological analysis 1 CFU
  • Injuries analysis and predictive models 0.5 CFU
  • Key performance indicators (KPI) in sport 0.5 CFU

Assessment of the athlete (5 CFU)

  • Exercise testing principles 1 CFU
  • Anthropometric, postural, movement, flexibility and mobility assessment 0.5 CFU
  • Cardiorespiratory endurance assessment 1 CFU
  • Muscular fitness assessment (strength, power and endurance) 1 CFU
  • Anaerobic capacity, speed, and agility assessment 0.5 CFU
  • Monitoring the athlete and return to play 0.5 CFU
  • Evaluation of the athlete's profile (profiling), comparison with the reference benchmarks (benchmarking), and short- and long- term goals 0.5

At the end of the course the students will have to show that the following knowledges and skills:

Know and understand the methodologies and techniques used in functional assessment in sport

Applying knowledge and understanding

Knowing how to apply their knowledge and understanding on the topic when conducting a functional evaluation in different sports and settings

Making judgements

Knowing how to deal autonomously with problems and manage particular cases that can be encountered during functional evaluation in sport through a professional and scientific approach

Communication skills

Knowing how to communicate clearly and effectively, both with specialists and non-specialists, the acquired knowledge and its practical application in different settings

Learning skills

Knowing how to stay up to date on the methodologies and techniques used in functional evaluation in sport through a professional and scientific approach
