This seminar is open to graduate students interested in acquiring training in the field of medieval manuscript studies, especially those related to medieval England and Germany.

Dieses Seminar ist fuer Studenten mit erstem (triennale) Uniabschluss gedacht, die sich gerne in die Handschriftenkunde und insbesondere in die Welt der deutschen und englischen mittelalterlichen Handschriften einarbeiten moechten.

The syllabus of this seminar has a theoretical and a training section. In the theoretical section we will be closely following the contents of the handbook Working with Anglo-saxon Manuscripts, edited by Gale R. Owen-Crocker (Exeter: University of Exeter Press, 2009). In the training section we will be practicing with the main points of the handbook by analysing some manuscripts from medieval England, Italy and Germany edited online or preserved at the Urbino section of the Italian State Archive. Accordingly, we will spend almost half of the seminar hours there.

Das Programm besteht aus einem theoretischen und einem praktischen Teil. Im theoretischen Teil werden wir Karin Schneiders Handbuch Palaeographie und Handschriftenkunde fuer Germanisten. Eine Einfuehrung (Tuebingen: Max Niemeyer Verlag, 1999) gruendlich bearbeiten. Ausgewaehlte Aspekte des Inhalts des Handbuchs werden dann im praktischen Teil des Seminars anhand von elekronischen Handschriftenaufnahmen sowie anhand vom Handschriftenbestand unseres Staatsarchivs gezielt eingeuebt. Zu diesem Zweck werden wir fast die Haelfte unserer Seminarstunden im Staatsarchiv verbringen.

This seminar will enable actively engaged students to handle a medieval manuscript correctly, describe it in English and Italian with the proper terminology and evaluate it within the historical framework it belongs to.

Die aktive und kooperative Teilnahme an diesem Seminar wird die Studenten befaehigen, eine mittelalterliche Handschrift aus dem deutsch- und englischsprachigen sowie aus dem mittellateinischen Kulturraum kodikologisch zu beschreiben und sie kulturhistorisch korrekt auszuwerten.

Modalità didattiche

This is a seminar based on the students' active involvement, team work, and much palaeographical training. If you are ready to work hard at the beginning, you will be rewarded with much fun at your discoveries and achievements at the State Archive. While handling a parchment or vellum fragment and trying to identify it you will be feeling a bit like a detective!

Das ist ein Seminar (d.h. keine Vorlesung), in dem ein Student durch haeufiges Fragen, Teamwork, muendliche Praesentationen von ausgewaehlten Themen und ein intensives Training anhand von echten Handschriften aktiv an der Gestaltung des Unterrichts teilnimmt. Das Ergebnis einer solchen Einstellung wird neben einer entsprechenden Benotung vor allem die Freude an der Begegnung mit der Welt des mittelalterlichen Buchs sein.

I strongly recommend you to attend at least 20 of the 30 seminar hours, especially those at the State Archive.
