During his scientific activity, Prof. Lucarini carried out research in the fields of Medicinal, Supramolecular, and Organic Chemistry in order to obtain new original methods for obtaining achiral and chiral molecules of pharmaceutical-biological interest, together with the development of new synthetic methods of potential industrial interest. In detail, during his undergrad thesis (Bologna), he did research in the field of foldamers, new oligomers with predictable three-dimensional structures with high biological activity. During his doctoral thesis (Urbino and Kansas, USA), he worked on the design, synthesis, and study of the anionic and cationic binding properties of new macrocycles for biological applications such as imaging for medical diagnostics. He then started working on the design and synthesis of diastero- and enantioselective ligands for melatonergic receptors. During the post-doc period in Tokyo (Japan), coinciding with the "avian pandemic", he developed a new synthetic method that is plausibly applicable to the production of (-) - shikimic acid, a key intermediate for the synthesis of Tamiflu, starting from achiral reagents and readily available on the market. Then, he developed new methodologies for the synthesis of natural products, containing the indole nucleus, with potential antitumor activity. Recently, he started a new and promising research line concerning the design and synthesis of new glycolipid for pharmaceutical/medicinal applications. In the last couple of years, he has been expanding the biological application of bisindoles, and in particular to the treatment of Leishmaniasis.
